How much do you know about fast charging, the current fast charging solutions supported by mobile phones.

At present, fast charging of mobile phones is a must-have for some mainstream mobile phones, but most users will not care too much. However, in real life, fast charging also brings us a lot of convenience and saves time. In the past two years, what we are most familiar with is OPPO’s ad “Charge for five minutes and talk for two hours.”

Although the fast charging technologies currently available on the market seem to be divided into different categories and have many factions, in the final analysis they are two ways of increasing voltage and current. The most common solutions are high voltage and low current, low voltage and high current. Whether it is high voltage or high current, it is to increase the power to increase the charging speed.
According to current market research, the main fast charging program standards on the market are divided into the following standards:

  1. Qualcomm: Quick Charge (belonging to high-voltage fast charge)
  2. MediaTek: Pump Express Plus (Pump Express 1.0 and 2.0 are high-voltage fast charging routes, starting from Pump Express 3.0 to low-voltage fast charging)
  3. OPPO: VOOC solution (belonging to low-voltage fast charge)
  4. Huawei: Compatible with QC2.0 protocol and HiSilicon fast charge protocol Huawei fast charge technology
  5. USB Developers Alliance: Power Delivery
  6. VIVO: dual-engine flash charging
  7. Samsung: own fast charging program
  8. Apple: 20V fast charging technology

1, Qualcomm Quick Charge

MWC 2021, Barcelona: Qualcomm unveils a series of global milestones in 5G - TechRepublic

Qualcomm Quick Charge is a typical solution with high voltage and low current. At present, Qualcomm’s quick charging solution has been developed to QC4.0+. From the initial QC 1.0 only supports the charging power of up to 5V/2A, to QC 2.0 is compatible with 5V/9V/ 12V/20V four-speed charging voltage, while Quick Charge 3.0 supports dynamic adjustment of the operating voltage from 3.6V to 20V, Quick Charge 4.0 provides a maximum charging power of 28W, Quick Charge 4.0 adds Dual Charge technology, compared to Quick Charge For 3.0, the charging speed can be increased by 20%, and the efficiency can be increased by 30%. The main improvement of QC4.0+ is to reduce the temperature during charging and optimize the charging time. It continues to use Dual Charge technology to improve the charging speed and efficiency. Compared with Quick Charge 4.0, the speed is increased by 15%, and the efficiency is increased by 30%. Compared with the previous generation technology, it is about 3 degrees lower.

Qualcomm’s solution is what mobile phones using Qualcomm chips have, but you have to know whether all mobile phones support fast charging. Some mobile phones equipped with Snapdragon 400 series and Snapdragon 600 also only support 5V/1A or 5V accordingly. /2A fast charging solution, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 series mobile phones generally support fast charging, such as: Mi 8, Mi MIX2S, etc. Therefore, when choosing a mobile phone, users who want to purchase a fast charging solution must read the parameters of the phone clearly.

  1. MediaTek MTP Pump Express fast charging technology

  1. The fast charging solution just launched by MediaTek is called Pump Express, which was subsequently upgraded to Pump Express Plus and Pump Express 3.0 fast charging technologies. Pump Express features: Allow the charger to determine the initial voltage required for charging according to the current, and the PMIC sends a pulse current command to be transmitted to the charger through the USB Vbus. The charger adjusts the output voltage according to this command, and the voltage gradually increases to 5V to reach the maximum recharging current. The principle of MediaTek’s MTP Pump Express Plus fast charging technology is similar to that of Qualcomm’s Quick Charge. Both ensure a constant current and achieve greater charging power by increasing the voltage from the charger to the USB port of the phone. Pump Express 3.0 claims to be able to fully charge a smartphone by 70% within 20 minutes, while reducing power consumption by 50% compared to PumpExpress Plus, indirectly reducing heat generation.

3. OPPO Super Flash Charge

OPPO VOOC flash charging technology uses a low voltage and high current solution. Although OPPO uses a Qualcomm processor, OPPO VOOC flash charging technology is a fast charging technology independently developed by OPPO. VOOC flash charging is the first to be used on OPPO Find 7. The most impressive is the brainwashing slogan “Charge for five minutes, talk for two hours.” VOOC flash charging requires a customized adapter and battery to be used together. VOOC flash charging adds an MCU smart chip to the adapter, thus realizing a revolutionary open voltage loop and segmented constant current technology. VOOC flash charging technology strictly regulates the current. The advantage of this is that it avoids the way of boosting the power, so the line loss will be reduced a lot, and the phenomenon of mobile phone heating can be effectively curbed. Recently, OPPO has introduced super flash charging technology, and the charging speed is also ahead of OPPO’s VOOC flash charging. In the OPPO Find X Lamborghini version just released, OPPO launched a brand new upgraded SuperVOOC super flash charger. The SuperVOOC super flash charger makes the mobile phone charging power historically break through 50W, and it only takes 35 minutes to fill a mobile phone. The super flash charge also continues the safety features. The internal innovative use of a dedicated charge-pump high-efficiency step-down circuit can reduce the voltage of the double cell in series to the voltage of a cell, and the current in the entire path does not exceed 5A.

Huawei’s Super Charge fast charging technology is also a technology developed by Huawei itself. Huawei SuperCharge dynamic charging voltage super fast charging technology, the charging voltage can be dynamically adjusted between 3.5-5V, and the output current can reach up to 5A. Huawei’s fast charging technology is basically carried by Huawei’s own Kirin chip processor mobile phones, for example: Huawei P20 and Mate10 both use 5V/4.5A chargers. Huawei’s SuperCharge fast charging technology is more intelligent: Huawei’s mobile phone has a built-in IC chip dedicated to power management, which can intelligently identify different chargers and data lines to match the best fast charging solution. The smart IC of Huawei Quick Charge will monitor the current battery level of the mobile phone in real time and dynamically adjust the input current to ensure that the charging process does not generate heat at low temperatures and conforms to the safe charging curve. After the battery is quickly charged to 60%, the IC chip will also intelligently control the charger to reduce the input Electric current plays a role in maintaining the battery.

5, USB Power Delivery
USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is a USB power delivery expansion standard that uses a USB (Universal Serial Bus) cable to provide a maximum of 100W power supply. In the past, the maximum USB power supply was USB 2.0 (2.5W), USB 3.0 (4.5W), and BC 1.2 version (7.5W). Now it has jumped to 100W for power supply, so laptops, tablets and other devices that could not be supported in the past Power can also be supplied and received, and the equipment that can be supported has been greatly expanded.
USB PD uses a USB Type-C® connector, which can provide power while communicating with the previous USB data, covering mobile phones, cameras, power banks, tablets, laptops, monitors, etc., charging and data transmission can be easily done with one line. It also supports Alternate Mote mode, so it can process video signals. Data transmission, power supply and reception, and video signal transmission can be carried out using one USB port, so that a simple and convenient environment can be built.

6, VIVO: dual-engine flash charging

The dual-engine flash charging technology adopts the parallel charging method of dual charging chips. During the fast charging process, two charging chips work at the same time. Through the dual-chip architecture, the charging efficiency of each IC can be effectively improved, making the charging chip safe and efficient. The continuous conversion of energy to the battery, the revenue and the efficiency of each charging chip have been improved, and the overall temperature rise of the mobile phone has also performed better.

Summary: At present, there are many kinds of fast charging solutions on the market, but in view of the mainstream processors on the market, they are Qualcomm, MediaTek, Huawei, Samsung, and Apple. So no matter which solution, as long as the same processor is used, the principle is the same. The most important thing is that if you want to achieve the purpose of fast charging, you must use a charger of the corresponding specification, otherwise it will not be able to achieve the purpose of fast charging. Therefore, users who need fast charging must read the parameters of the phone when buying a mobile phone, and pay attention to using the charger of the corresponding specification when using the mobile phone.
